MHL leavers: Denis Karatayev
The Press Service of Barys begins a series of publications about hockey players from the club system who have officially completed their path in youth hockey. One of the leavers of the Youth Hockey League last season was goaltender Denis Karatayev.
Denis made his YHL debut on November 17, 2016 at the age of 17. On that day, he spent the whole match against Tolpar team; he recorded 41 saves and helped Snezhnye Barsy with away win with the score 3:2. Overall, Karatayev played 17 games in his first season in the YHL.
Already in the next season of 2017-18, Denis became the main goaltender of Snezhnye Barsy. He won 22 of 50 games (more than 2,800 minutes of playing time), conceding an average of 3.29 goals with 91% of puck rushes beaten back.
In the same year, Karatayev made a decent contribution to the entry of the youth national team of Kazakhstan into the elite division of world hockey. At the World Junior Championship in France, Denis appeared on the ice in four matches, and our team won each of them.
Last season was actually the goaltender's final season in the YHL. Denis spent most of this season with Nomad, which made its debut in the Senior Hockey League. However, when it was needed, the goaltender was also involved in the matches of Snezhnye Barsy, having played 7 matches.
Karatayev played his final game in the YHL on January 27, 2020. It is noteworthy that this meeting was the player's hundredth anniversary in the YHL. During this time, he recorded 37 wins (5 shutouts), 2,853 saves and even 2 assists.
Now the sportsman will have to prove himself at an adult level. Recall that at the end of May, Karatayev signed a bilateral contract with Barys for two seasons.
Denis Karataev about the MHL:
- The League gave me valuable experience and prepared me for adult hockey. This is a step that all young players must pass. I will always remember my first match in the YHL. I was very young then. Of course, I was nervous, but it was very interesting. I also experienced unforgettable emotions when I earned the first shutout. I would like to thank the coachers I worked with in Snezhnye Barsy. They taught me a lot, and this experience will be useful in my future career.
